Overview

The admissions digital viewbook was designed to create an immersive destination for NC State’s Enrollment Management and Services (EMAS) department to aid in the recruitment of prospective students. EMAS was looking to convert their traditional printed on-campus viewbook into an innovative mobile-first site that entices prospective students through compelling content, photos, and videos.

MY ROLE

I worked on the project as the lead visual designer alongside a content strategist and web developer.

Mood board

EMAS challenged us to create an experiential website that made the user feel like they were at NC State. They wanted something outside of the box of our typical platforms and stretched the university brand. To meet this ambitious goal, my team first met for an initial brainstorming session and started to collect inspiration in the form of websites, photography, and illustrations.

During the brainstorming session, we kept coming back to the idea of the website as an experience and looked to things that did that really well. These came in the form of travel and art museum websites, both of which are designed to make the user feel like they are experiencing that place from their home.

After the brainstorming session, I compiled all of our inspiration into a focused mood board we could present to the client.

Wireframes

After establishing a rough idea of the direction we wanted to take with the site, a wireframe for each page began to quickly take shape. I quickly sketched out each page by hand and then turned those sketches into high-fidelity wireframes.

The wireframing stage of this project was unique because I worked very closely with the content strategist, so the layout of each page was heavily influenced by how the content took shape.

During the wireframing stage, I planned out the page flow and interactions for both mobile and desktop views.

Prototypes

Once the wireframes were completely thought out, I moved on to high-fidelity prototypes using Adobe XD. The prototype was handed off to the web development team for production.

The site was launched in the summer of 2018 and won several design and content awards proving that the site was a success.
